“Building Skills for Tomorrow: How Technology Can Improve Learning”
With Travis Smith, National Director of Expanding Learning Horizons, Australia & Jason Trump,
  • Implementing ICT into education opens a door for learning through connectivity and internationalization of schools.
  • Teaching using ICT allows for personalized learning, which enables students to learn at their own pace and with their own learning styles; be it auditory, visual or practical.
  • The benefit of learning with technology is that it addresses different types of intelligences of the students.
  • The idea of personalized learning is that students make use of their own understanding and have their own level of success regardless of whether they are fast or slow learners.
  • ICT programmes such as OneNote and Microsoft Lync can enhance pedagogical practices in school to enhance learning for students.
  • More attention should be paid to exposing IT education opportunities and teachers’ professional development is a crucial step to implementing ICT into education.
Introducing Asia Inc Forum
Unplugged

Fong Wai Hong, Founder of OzHut, Australia

Wai Hong is the 25 year old chieftain of OZHut, a multi-niche online retailer in Australia. A self-confessed geek, Wai Hong established OZHut as a fresh graduate of the University of Melbourne in 2008 with very limited capital at the back of his uncle’s shed.  Today, five years on, OZHut has carved out its own space in the crowded online retail sector, generating $2.6 million in sales last financial year.

Key Highlights

  • “You will never have all the skills required to be successful because you are only one person. The biggest thing for me is to learn from a multitude of people.”
  • “In business, we have to fail many times. I failed a lot that I learned to engage that failure.”
  • “There is a whole changing landscape of e-Commerce and the single most important thing to develop is the ability to quickly adjust and adapt to what the market dictates.”
  • “The biggest investment is in people. Even if they leave it’s okay. We must invest in people.”
  • “As start-ups, it’s not wise to just take money out of the business at an early stage. The first three years of revenues should continually be reinvested into the business.”
  • “Without making those mistakes, business won’t be where it is today.”
  • “We did a lot a lot of things like writing guides for star gazing which drew attention to the site. That’s how we started ranking well and its definitely by design”
